Many types of timber were used at the works to make machinery parts and for general building work. Timber was seasoned in coded stacks and regularly checked with moisture meters to establish when it had finished shrinking and warping and was ready for use.
The time needed for seasoning depended on the timber species, its intended use and weather conditions. Mountain ash, used for timber casing and frames, took six months, and karri, when used as poles on binder machines, took two years.
