Machinery parts were painted in a tank, or dip, measuring 12 x 5 ft (3.65 x 1.52 m). An air hoist was used to lift parts and lower them into the dip. Once coated, they were lifted out and left to drain, before being moved to an area known as the orchard to dry. It could take up to a week for the paint to properly dry.
