This department produced sand cores — moulded shapes used to create holes in metal pieces as they were cast. Cores were shaped then baked in large ovens before being sent to the foundry. They were made of a special mix of sand and oil that kept its shape during contact with molten metal.
From the 1920s the core shop was one of the few departments that employed women.
