Section of a mat

Place: Tonga
Category: Mats

leaf strips, Tonga, l. 152 cm, Hanover 1854, No. 52

Humphrey No. 115: ‘a long narrow piece of striped & chequered black and white matting from ditto [Friendly Isles].’ (= Hanover 1854, No. 52)

Forster (according to Osiander Register 1812-15) (?) (= Oz 533)

The mat Oz 533 is made of light and dark brown plaited flax strips, with an alternation of different geometric patterns. This mat is possibly that under the No. 114 b, a badly damaged mat, listed in the Osiander Register (1812-15). The part of a mat was evidently cut from a larger mat and corresponds in its patterning to a side border of the Göttingen mat, which nevertheless features closing borders on all four edges.
