Flywhisk handle (fragment)

Flywhisk handle (fragment)

Place: Tahiti & Society Islands
Category: Household

ironwood (Casuarina equistifolia), Tahiti and the Society Islands, l. 14.5 cm, w. 3.4 cm (max.), Inv. Oz 419

Forster Register B. 13: ‘1 idol made of wood’

The less detailed image made from the same wood as object Oz 418 may, because of breaks in the region of the calves, be identified as a fragment of a fly whisk handle. In contrast to Oz 418, the legs of this figure are less strongly emphasised; the arms are bent more and rest on the chest without clearly discernible hands or fingers; the eye region is marked by two simple V-shaped incisions.
