Barkcloth beater tupai

Barkcloth beater tupai

Place: Tahiti & Society Islands
Category: Barkcloth

wood, Tahiti and the Society Islands, l. 37 cm, Hanover 1854, No. 11

Forster Register B.5: ‘a mallet to turn tree bark into clothes from Otaheiti’.

A somewhat smaller beater that corresponds in form and material largely to Oz 406 but does not feature the latter’s V-shaped carving. It is not as well-preserved as Oz 406 because of several chips in the grooves of the beating surfaces and cracks at the edge of the beating end. Gundolf Krüger
