Tahiti and the Society Islands, l. 140 cm, w. 200 cm, Inv. Oz 615

Humphrey No. 11: ‘A piece of thin Bark Cloth of a light brown with a Cast of Red, from the Society Isles.’

The fine lines caused by the beating with the barkcloth beater, tupai, are easy to discern on this coarse and single-layered cloth. Three borders are badly creased, one corner (30 x 15 cm) has been cut away. There is a Humphrey label in one corner with the number 11. The cloth is dyed a yellow-brownish colour and also exhibits some reddish and greyish discolouration. From its size, we may assume that it was used in the same way as Oz 613. Gundolf Krüger
