King of Wickham Hill

Engraved breastplate.
Sawyer, King of Wickham Hill

This gorget is another of the five on which the figure of an Aboriginal man is engraved. The man wears knee breeches and carries a boomerang and spear. The plate is very aged and has been scratched, pitted and dented.

Its shape is very like that of a military gorget and the style of lettering and design suggests that it was made in the mid-19th century. Nice features of the manufacture of this gorget are the handmade S-hooks linking the machine-made chain to the plate.

To date, no information about Sawyer or Wickham-Hill has been located.
