Thelma Judson

born about 1956, Manyjilyjarra language group, Milangka skin group, Parnngurr community, Martumili Artists

Thelma was born in the Percival Lakes region and grew up around Yimiri and Kurturarra. In 1964 her family was one of the last Martu groups to leave the desert and be reunited with their families at Jigalong mission.

After she left school Thelma moved to Strelley station and married in Jigalong, where she had her children. Today she lives in Parnngurr with her husband, Yanjimi Peter Rowlands, and their children.

A funnel shaped basket of multicoloured coiled yarn over plant fibre with a beaded edge. The yarn is rainbow coloured with a dominant yellow tone. The maroon yarn used at the base has small silver sequins in it. The round wood beads attached at the top edge of the basket are mostly red and brown with a few green, yellow, black and natural coloured ones. - click to view larger image — Basket

A shallow multicoloured coiled yarn over plant fibre basket decorated with circles of beads. The yarn is in rainbow colours with a dark pink most dominant. Some of the yarn has small sequins on it and one of the yarns is a fluffy blue and aqua. There is a circle of natural wood cylinder beads near the edge of the basket, with rows of natural coloured oval wood beads and multicoloured round wood beads inside it. The centre of the basket is teal green yarn with maroon yarn over it, which then changes to fluffy blue yarn for one round. After this blue row the basket has a number of rows where the coiled yarn is spaced out showing the fibre underneath. - click to view larger image — Basket
