Miriam is the daughter of Wimmitji Tjapangarti, and the sister of Lucy Yukenbarri. Miriam was a young girl when a helicopter landed at Natawalu, taking her young brother-in-law to Balgo.

She and her family group did not follow the helicopter to Balgo immediately, but went back hunting around Kukapanyu (Well 39) before deciding to travel north to the mission. Miriam is married to Patrick Tjungurrayi.
