In Dharawal we have many dreaming stories. One explains the origins of our animals. They came to Dharawal country as people in a large vessel. During their journey they slowly transformed into animals, the koala, the crane and the whale.

Another dreaming story tells of how the spirits of the dead returned in low lying cloud. Sheltering from the storm lightning strikes the cave entrance trapping Dharawal people. Out of the rubble the red gymea lily emerges and opens up a way out.

When the Endeavour arrived in 1770 we tried to make sense of it through a spiritual lens. Its sails looked like the low lying clouds we had seen before. The spirits of the dead had returned.
