Just three weeks after becoming Prime Minister, Julia Gillard announced that an election would be held on 21 August 2010. Opposition Leader Tony Abbott proved to be a disciplined and effective opponent, continually attacking the government on the issues of government waste, tax, debt reduction and asylum seekers. For its part, Labor struggled unsuccessfully to put the question of why Kevin Rudd had been deposed behind it.
