On 7 February 2009 soaring temperatures combined with extreme wind gusts to fuel a series of bushfires that swept across Victoria. Their impact was devastating. Over 400,000 hectares of bushland were burnt, 2,029 homes were destroyed and 173 people died. While Victoria burned, parts of Queensland were in flood. Cartoonists struggled along with the rest of the community to comprehend the scale of destruction.
