On 11 December 2005, a crowd of over 5,000 people gathered at Cronulla beach to 'reclaim the beach'. Violence erupted as elements of the crowd attacked several people of Middle Eastern appearance. Urged on by SMS text messages, the violence was apparently incited by an earlier attack on surf lifesavers, but also revealed deep racial tensions in Sydney's south-western suburbs.
