Cartoonists watched with fascination as Mark Latham streaked across the political firmament. Appearing first as a bright light as he assumed the Labor leadership, he quickly burnt out in the election campaign and crashed to earth. His resignation, due to a bout of serious illness in early January 2005, brought his meteoric career to an end.
