Peter Drew’s iconic poster series featured archival photos of people who sought exemption from the dictation test that applied to non-British migrants entering Australia. Aussie: Posters by Peter Drew revealed the stories behind the faces.

This exhibition was on show at the National Museum from 11 May to 24 September 2023.

What does it mean to be Aussie?

The people on Drew's posters were born in Australia or had lived here for many years.

They wanted to travel overseas so had to apply for exemption from the dictation test before leaving. Without it, they could be refused entry to Australia on their return.
