The penal colony of New South Wales was a constant financial drain on the British government during its earliest years. One of Macquarie’s most significant achievements was stabilising the colony’s fragile economy. He introduced a new form of currency, and supported the establishment of the first bank. Together these measures paved the way for the colony’s growth.
