The National Museum of Australia will open storage and conservation work areas at the Museum's Mitchell, ACT store from 11am to 2pm on Sunday 14 November, 2010.
The free Open Day provides rare access to the National Museum's Collection in storage and watch conservators at work. Visitors will see how the National Museum conserves and preserves the Collection and have the opportunity to talk to expert staff.
'The National Museum has great things in the collection and it's a pity we can not show more of them in our main building on the Acton Peninsula. The Open Day is one way we can begin to address this,' said Andrew Sayers, Director of the National Museum of Australia.
'It is a great opportunity for us to share some of our collection highlights with the people of Canberra. The Open Day also points to our plans to display many more of these national treasures in the future. And it allows us to introduce our audiences to the people who look after important cultural artefacts on behalf of the nation,' said Mr Sayers.
Hundreds of objects will be on display and the National Museum's team of Registrars, Conservators and Curators will discuss their work. Large collection items including vehicles will be on show as well as textiles and cultural objects.
