The 500,000th school student to visit the National Museum of Australia is due to arrive in Canberra tomorrow afternoon, Wednesday, February 28.
The milestone comes days after the National Museum was named Australia's Best Major Tourist Attraction at the 2006-07 Australian Tourism Awards.
Since the Museum opened in March 2001, about 85,000 students and 4000 teachers have visited the Museum each year from 1500 schools across Australia.
'The National Museum's education programs help students to better understand and appreciate Australia's history, cultures and environment,' National Museum Acting Director Suzy Nethercott-Watson said.
'Students are encouraged to get hands-on with history through activities which link directly to their school curriculum and are both educational and enjoyable.'

Several schools are booked to visit the Museum tomorrow. The school with the 500,000th student will receive a suite of publications from the National Museum of Australia Press.
