The National Museum of Australia is delighted with the response to the family festival day on Australia Day.
More than five thousand people attended the festival, setting a new record for an event at the National Museum of Australia.
'We are greatly encouraged by the increase in crowd numbers. The National Museum of Australia is the natural place to celebrate all things Australian, especially on Australia Day,' said Louise Douglas, the National Museum's General Manager of Audience and Programs.
'The Australia Day festival had a beach theme to coincide with our current exhibition of Between the Flags: 100 Years of Surf Lifesaving and people clearly loved the range of activities. The sand pit was a real hit with kids of all ages.'
Visitor numbers were more than a thousand up on Australia Day 2006. The festival program was spread over five hours with an emphasis on hands-on craft, activities and music.
Between the Flags, an exhibition celebrating the centenary of surf lifesaving in Australia, closes on 11 February and will then travel to a number of State capitals.
