A talented storyteller who delights children at the Story Place in National Museum of Australia in Canberra is taking her tales to schools and libraries in Port Lincoln and area next week.
Marina Knight, who has had a long association with the Museum, will tell stories with an environmental theme.
'This is the first time one of our storytellers has travelled outside Canberra, and we hope it is the forerunner of many such visits to groups around the country,' said Denise Fowler, the Museum's children's programs coordinator.
'A number of the schools Marina will visit have students who were affected by the recent fires in the region - and some schools lost children to the fires. We had terrible fires here in Canberra, too, and we found that storytelling helped in the healing process for children.'
This is the main reason the Museum responded to a request for the visit from a Port Lincoln resident, Christine Dennis, who had enjoyed attending storytelling sessions at the Museum when she lived in Canberra.
Marina Knight will visit Port Lincoln from Monday, April 4 to Friday, April 8. She will spin yarns at the following locations:
- Monday, April 4
Cummins School - Tuesday, April 5St Joseph's School
- Wednesday, April 6
Poonindie School
St Joseph's School - Thursday, April 7
Port Lincoln Special School
Port Lincoln Children's Services
Lake Wangery Public School - Friday, April 8
Port Lincoln Public Library - some local kindergartens will attend, beginning at 9.30am.
The National Museum's Story Place is located in the bowels of a Boab Tree, where live storytelling takes place at 10am every Wednesday (except school holidays) for under-fives and every Saturday, Sunday and each day of school holidays, from 11am.
