Lyn Beasley with Juliet and her exhibit – '4 Quarters and Time On'
Each year, students from all around Australia enter the National History Challenge, and as a partner in the Challenge, the National Museum awards a special prize to the best museum display entry.
In 2010, Juliet Morelli, from Loreto College in Adelaide, won our prize for her display ’4 quarters and time on’, which explores the association of Indigenous people with the game of Australian Rules football.
The judges were impressed by how Juliet carefully crafted a connection to the Eternity gallery, and commented that her exhibit:
strikes a balance between sophisticated historical research and popular culture. The aesthetic was highly symbolic and demonstrated an impressive understanding of Indigenous art motifs and techniques.
Each quarter of the football is decorated with imagery and graphic elements, and the companion text explains the associations that Juliet was making as she created the work.
If you can make it to the National Museum this summer, look for Juliet’s award-winning work in the Hall. Congratulations, Juliet!
