Yiwarra Kuju: The Canning Stock Route is a wonderful (and *free*) exhibition at the National Museum, well worth a visit for yourself and for students of any age. It’s about the history of the droving route through Western Australia but it’s also about what’s going on in Country now.
For visitors to the exhibition, Education staff offer two different programs (PDF 831kb). Self-guided visitors can follow a family trail (PDF 478kb).
The education kit for Yiwarra Kuju is also a treat and each school that brings a group to visit will receive a beautifully-printed copy for free. (For everyone else, it’s available in PDF.) The following paintings feature in the kit.
One other point to mention about this exhibition is the amazing multitouch table. Around the wealth of photographs, documentary and oral history, you can draw in the sand, watch in delight as different desert creatures arrive and depart, and yes, you can even squash the ants.
Yiwarra Kuju is at the National Museum until 26 January 2011, then touring to Western Australia.
